11.03.08 Politicians Named On Police Blotters
The New Herald printed a story on Walt Church today based off the story that ran in the Winston Salem Journal yesterday.

11.02.08 Exceptions can be made; exceptions can be abused
Here's a link to a story on Walt Church in the W-Salem Journal. You may find the story interesting. Walt is regularly bragging on his connections and influence. I guess this story is another instance of his trying to use his influence, this time on a highway patrolman who gave him a ticket for speeding 92 in a 65 zone and for following too closely.
It's also another illustration of Walt, Jr. doing the talking after trouble arises and Walt not being available to personally handle matters. Walt, Jr. told a crowd at Lake James that Walt, Sr. twisted arms behind closed doors to get the community college system to give Western Piedmont a $ 1 million grant. (Of course the Morganton News Herald recently reported that Walt claimed he was "jockeying" to get the money for our local community college.) However you phrase it, this article from Winston-Salem says that Walt, Sr. threatened to call the highway patrol trooper's boss and, I guess, do a little arm-twisting or jockeying, if the trooper didn't relent. Unfortunately for Walt, Sr., he failed in the effort to pressure the trooper not to give a ticket- just as Walt failed to get the legislature to make an appropriation of $ 1 million to Western Piedmont for the Allied Health and Higher Ed Building. Isn't it good to know we have state troopers who'll stand up to the threats of veteran state legislators who know the trooper's boss?
Maybe you can share this link on the story with those who would want to know how Walt, Sr. tries to influence others.

10.23.08 Less than two weeks to go
With less than two weeks remaining in the campaign, I am very
upbeat about our chances for victory and the opportunity to make a
real difference for Burke County in Raleigh. I have been knocking
on doors, meeting voters face-to-face on their doorsteps. I hear a
common refrain from them: they are tired of the business-as-usual
backroom politicians and they want new leadership that works hard
for them.

09.10.08 Mary Easley's pay would be in top 3%
As Governor Easley’s 8 years in office come to an end, now we learn his friends and appointees are hiring the governor’s wife, Mary, at a salary of $170,000 for a specially designed job at NC State. No wonder education and state government is in a mess when the governor’s cronies and appointees give his wife a sweetheart deal like this. This is part of the same leadership that my opponent, Walt Church, nice guy that he is, has loyally supported and followed for 17 years whenever they need his vote in Raleigh. If I’m elected, you can be sure I’ll work as hard as I can to put a halt to this kind of political favoritism and waste of taxpayer money. Read the article and see how current leaders in Raleigh are “milking” the state.

08.30.08 Locals respond to McCain's VP pick
...Abele and Hugh Blackwell, a Republican running for the State House in the 86th district, agree that Palin is an impressive selection.
"I think it's wonderful that he selected such a seemingly well qualified and capable woman to be on the ticket with him," Blackwell said. "She has had executive experience in a number of roles and in leadership roles."
"She and her family have a lot of practical and real world experience in common with the average voter who comes from these kinds of backgrounds," Blackwell said...
...Political pundits have put forth the idea that McCain chose Palin to win over the bitter and angry women who sup-ported Clinton's run for the Democratic nomination.
"I think (McCain) would be foolish if that didn't factor into his decision," Blackwell said. "It's not picking a woman just to have a woman. It's picking a woman who is well qualified."...
...As for the future of women in politics?
Blackwell said, "It's just a matter of time and finding the right woman whose policy experience and character fit what a majority of the American people are looking for in a president."...
